The current flag of Canada.
WCanada is a country that occupies most of the Northern region of North America. First settled by the French and was later conquered by British and American colonial forces during the Seven Years War, by 1867 the British North American Colonies of Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick united to form the Dominion of Canada. As a Dominion of the British Empire, Canada became a self governing colony with it's own laws and customs.
As a part of the British Empire, Canada became involved in the First World War when Great Britain declared war on August 4, 1914. In late 1931, the country gained independence from Great Britain through the Statute of Westminster.
On September 10, 1939, Canada declared war on Germany, one week after Great Britain. During World War II, Canada participated in many battles of the war, including the Battle of Britain, Battle of the Atlantic, the Battle of Hong Kong, the infamous Dieppe Raid, the Aleutian Islands campaign and various operations in the European and Mediterranean theatres. Over 1.1 million Canadians would serve in all branches of the military by the end of the war. Which was about 10% of the population at the time.
