The Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (Russian: Рабоче-крестьянская Красная армия, Raboče-krestjjanskaja Krasnaja armija), frequently shortened to Red Army, was the army and the air force of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and, after 1922, the Soviet Union. The army started out as a revolutionary militia during the Russian Civil War. After its victory and the establishment of the Soviet Union, it became the national army of the Soviet Union, and, by the 1930s, was one of the largest armies in history.

During World War II, the Soviet Union started the war together with the Third Reich by invading Poland and maintaining good relations with the Axis, then from June 1941 remained on the side of the Allies. Red Army fought on the front lines against Axis forces in the Eastern Front and Manchuria. Though originally it faced numerous defeats and encirclements during Operation Barborossa, the Red Army would turn the tide in 1942 with mass offensives and encirclements of its own and would defeat about 80% of Wehrmacht and Waffen SS forces. In 1946, the Red Army was renamed the Soviet Army until 1991, where the Soviet Army was separated and reformed into armed forces of different sovereign states.
